Get an overview on completing the FAFSA®

October 10, 2016 by Lacey Love

In partnership with the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA), the Peters Township Public Library will offer a free FAFSA Completion Overview on Monday, November 7 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the library. This workshop, for college-bound seniors and their parents, offers help in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) by providing an overview of each step of the form.

Registration is required for this program. Register online or call 724-941-9430 #1.

Important changes have gone into effect beginning with the 2017–18 FAFSA®:

  • You’ll be able to submit your 2017-2018 FAFSA® as early as Oct. 1, 2016, rather than Jan. 1, 2017. The earlier submission date will be a permanent change, enabling you to complete and submit a FAFSA® as early as October 1 every year.
  • You’ll use earlier income and tax information. Beginning with the 2017–18 FAFSA®, students will be required to report income and tax information from an earlier tax year. On the 2017–18 FAFSA® you will report your 2015 income and tax information, rather than your 2016 income and tax information.

Medicare 101

September 7, 2016 by Lacey Love

The Peters Township Public Library will host Medicare 101 on Thursday, September 29 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the library. Adele Dean, the Regional APPRISE Coordinator, will be the featured speaker providing information on Medicare and the APPRISE Program.

Registration is required for this program. Register online or call 724.941.9430 #1.

Medicare continues to provide important benefits as the health insurance program for people 65 and older, people under 65 with certain disabilities, and people of any age with end-stage renal disease, permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a kidney transplant. APPRISE is a free health insurance counseling program designed to help older Pennsylvanians with Medicare.

Dean’s presentation will review both the Medicare and APPRISE programs with handouts and New to Medicare packets available for persons attending the program. She will discuss other assistance programs such as PACE/PACENET, Extra Help and the Medicare Savings Program. If you think you may qualify for an assistance program or need help discussing the costs of Medicare, you will be able to schedule an appointment with Dean after her presentation.

Adele Dean is the Regional Coordinator for the Pennsylvania Department of Aging’s APPRISE Program. She coordinates the program for 18 counties in Western PA and works for the Southwestern PA Area Agency on Aging, Inc.

College Financial Aid Night

August 29, 2016 by Lacey Love

Significant changes are coming to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) this year. To help high school seniors and their parents understand how the changes will affect filing for federal financial aid and possibly how much aid they will receive, the Peters Township Public Library will partner with the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) to offer a College Financial Aid Night on Tuesday, September 20 at 6:30 p.m.

Jayeann Harr, Education Access Partner with PHEAA, will explain how with the new process, families will be able to begin completing the FAFSA on October 1, rather than January 1. This change more closely aligns the financial aid application process with the admission application process. In order to accommodate this earlier filing schedule, the FAFSA will collect income information from two years prior to the academic year rather than the previous year.

Registration is required for this program. Register online or call 724.941.9430 #1.
