Air Force One with author John L. Haigh

October 10, 2019 by Lacey Love

Join John L. Haigh on Monday, October 21 at 7:00 p.m. as he talks about his 12 plus years serving as a crew member aboard the Air Force One flight crew.

More about the author:

“As a young person growing up in a small coal mining community in western Pennsylvania, I dreamed of traveling and seeing the world. Upon graduation from high school, I enlisted in the United States Air Force, not knowing where my travels would take me. I volunteered for flying duty and was sent to McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey in 1963. From there, I traveled all over the world transporting troops. In 1973, I volunteered and was accepted into the 89th military airlift wing, special air missions organization at Andrews Air Force Base, Maryland, which required a top-secret clearance, and was the home of Air Force One. After experiencing my first Air Force One backup trip with President Nixon to Europe and the Middle East, I set another goal to become a permanent member of the Air Force One flight crew; but it did not happen right away. Meanwhile, I was privileged to fly missions that included a 33 day presidential goodwill trip with the Apollo 17 astronauts, (the last men to walk on the moon), around the world, the prime minister of India, premier of China, Chancellor of Germany, President of Turkey, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip, President Carter’s mother, Ms Lillian, cabinet-level officers, members of Congress, high ranking military officers, Vice President’s Ford and Mondale. On September 1, 1979, I was selected as a permanent member of the Air Force One flight crew, during the last 16 months of the Carter administration, 8 years with President Reagan (19 months of which were served as his Chief Steward), 3 1/2 years as chief steward for President Bush SR. To quote President Bush Sr., “It was great to travel with the First Team”. The Presidents I was privileged to serve were ordinary folks like you and I, who did extraordinary things to be elected. Personally, I had the time of my life, fulfilling my dreams of world travels, and it truly was a privilege and pleasure to serve the Presidents aboard Air Force One.“

Even before blogs existed, she was the go-to writer for millions of readers on the joys and challenges of family, motherhood, and modern life. Bringing to the stage her ability to balance the political with the personal, Quindlen discusses every aspect of our culture from work-life balance and education to health care, philanthropy, and social justice.

Quindlen’s newest New York Times bestseller, Nanaville: Adventures in Grandparenting, celebrates the love and joy and many lessons learned from being a grandmother. Her latest bestselling novel, Alternate Side, is a provocative look at what it means to be a mother, a wife, and a woman at a moment of reckoning.

Thirteen of Quindlen’s books, including seven of her novels, have appeared on The New York Times Best Sellers list. One True Thing became a feature film starring Renee Zellweger and Meryl Streep, and Black and Blue was made into a TV movie. Her book,  A Short Guide to A Happy Life, sold well over one million copies.

Quindlen’s memoir on aging, Lots Of Candles, Plenty Of Cake debuted at #1 on The New York Times Best Sellers list, while her follow-up bestseller, Still Life with Bread Crumbs, debuted at #3.

One of the top “100 Outstanding Journalists in the United States of the Last 100 Years,” Quindlen began her career at age 18 as a copy girl. She spent three years as a reporter for The New York Post before moving to The New York Times in 1977. Working her way up The Times’ masthead, Quindlen wrote the “About New York” column, served as deputy metropolitan editor, and created the weekly “Life in the 30’s” column.

In 1990, Quindlen became the third woman in The New York Times’ history to write for its influential Op-Ed page. Her nationally syndicated column “Public and Private” won the Pulitzer Prize for Commentary in 1992, and then, Quindlen wrote the “Last Word” column for Newsweek for 10 years.

Library and WQED Celebrate Service Members and Their Families

October 23, 2018 by Lacey Love

In partnership with WQED Education, Peters Township Public Library will be hosting a family friendly event to celebrate and honor local service members and their families over Veterans Day weekend.

Peters Township Public Library will host Welcome Home: Celebrating Veterans and Their Families on Saturday, November 10 from noon until 2:00 p.m. Service members and their young families will enjoy a meet-and-greet with Katerina Kittycat from Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, refreshments, a caricature artist, and a special performance by Pittsburgh Magician Al Mazing at 1 p.m. All are welcome to attend this event. Registration is requested online or call 724.941.9430 #1.

This event is part of a Veterans Coming Home grant that WQED received from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Veterans Coming Home is a collaborative, multi-platform effort to highlight innovative, effective programs and individuals that are leading the way to better outcomes for service members as they transition to civilian life.

“Military service extends beyond the person who directly answers the call to serve to encompass the whole family,” said Gina Masciola, manager of education projects. “It is important that we thank service members for the sacrifices they make, but this event also allows us to draw attention to and celebrate the service of their families as well. Libraries are the perfect community partner to host these thank you events as they are an integral part of the communities they serve.”

For more information, call the library at 724.941.9430 #1.
