It’s A Hockey Night in Pittsburgh

August 4, 2016 by Lacey Love

At the conclusion of the Pittsburgh Penguin’s Stanley Cup Victory Parade last month, Coach Mike Sullivan declared to over 375, 000 spectators at the celebration that Pittsburgh “….is one crazy hockey town.” But how much do we really know about the history of the sport in our area? Over 60 of our guests learned a great deal at “It’s a Hockey Night in Pittsburgh: 1893 to Today”, a brand new program created by Heinz History Center that was offered at the library on Wednesday, August 3 from 7-8:45 p.m.

Hockey has a rich and interesting history in Pittsburgh from its 19th century beginnings in Oakland to the Civic Arena and currently at Consol Energy Center. Amateur hockey with the Yellow Jackets, the minor leagues with the Shamrocks and Hornets, the NHL with the Pirates and Penguins, we have had it all, and the saga continues! Guest speaker for the event was Larry Woods, a volunteer at the Heinz History Center. He shares his love of a variety of historical topics of local interest with guests to the center as well as through outreach presentations to the larger western PA community. After the program two lucky persons were chosen at random to win a pair of free tickets to the Heinz History Center, compliments of the Center.

Your Property Reassessment

August 4, 2016 by Lacey Love

Over 700 persons filled the Peters Township High School for Your Property Reassessment: What Does It Mean? on Monday, August 1 at 6:30 p.m. Library staff organized the event to help residents understand the recent property reassessment that was conducted in Washington County.

Guest speakers for this event included Commissioner Harlan G. Shober, Jr., County Director of Administration Scott Fergus, and Attorney Susan Key. Topics discussed included:

  • The Status of Washington County’s reassessment
  • The Appeal Process: How it Works
  • How to Look at Your Property Values
  • Examples of Assessed Values vs. Millage Rates/Taxe

The program was videotaped by Peters Township Community Television and can be viewed here. It is also being broadcast locally on Channel 7 or Channel 38. Check the current broadcast schedule for dates and times.

If property owners are not satisfied with the new value, they may submit an appeal with the Washington County Board of Assessment Appeals not later than Wednesday, August 10, 2016.

Visit the Property Reassessment Information on the library web site for links to the online resources discussed during the program.
