Still Family Storytime

July 31, 2019 by Lacey Love

The library is once again partnering with The Still Remembered Project and WQED to offer a memorable storytime for children and families who have experienced loss. The program will offer encouraging and uplifting stories and activities to help children understand loss and grief. We will be joined by Clifford the Big Red Dog for lots of hugs and photos. This program is being facilitated by Ms. Shannon in memory of her niece Scarlett Pauley.

Please register online to let us know you and your family members will be joining us.

The Still Remembered Project provides bereaved parents and families Christian-based support and encouragement for a loss due to miscarriage, stillbirth, or early infant death. Their efforts offer hope and healing throughout all stages of the grief journey. They accomplish this mission by:

– Educating local medical and bereavement communities,
– Providing remembrance keepsakes to families,
– Holding awareness events, and
– Hosting a monthly peer support group meeting for bereaved mothers.

For more information, contact Shannon Pauley at 724.941.9430 #3.

Library and WQED Celebrate Service Members and Their Families

October 23, 2018 by Lacey Love

In partnership with WQED Education, Peters Township Public Library will be hosting a family friendly event to celebrate and honor local service members and their families over Veterans Day weekend.

Peters Township Public Library will host Welcome Home: Celebrating Veterans and Their Families on Saturday, November 10 from noon until 2:00 p.m. Service members and their young families will enjoy a meet-and-greet with Katerina Kittycat from Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood, refreshments, a caricature artist, and a special performance by Pittsburgh Magician Al Mazing at 1 p.m. All are welcome to attend this event. Registration is requested online or call 724.941.9430 #1.

This event is part of a Veterans Coming Home grant that WQED received from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting (CPB). Veterans Coming Home is a collaborative, multi-platform effort to highlight innovative, effective programs and individuals that are leading the way to better outcomes for service members as they transition to civilian life.

“Military service extends beyond the person who directly answers the call to serve to encompass the whole family,” said Gina Masciola, manager of education projects. “It is important that we thank service members for the sacrifices they make, but this event also allows us to draw attention to and celebrate the service of their families as well. Libraries are the perfect community partner to host these thank you events as they are an integral part of the communities they serve.”

Books will be inscribed by the author and can be picked at the program on Thursday, March 30. Print and complete your Jackie Urbanovic Book Pre-Orders and bring it to the Circulation Desk with your payment.

This evening of early literacy fun is offered as part of the Pennsylvania Library Association’s statewide initiative, PA Forward, to demonstrate that libraries can push Pennsylvania to achieve one of the highest literacy rates in the country, a better trained and more skilled workforce, and a growing tax base, economy, and population.

“1000 Books Before Kindergarten” is a free program that encourages reading to newborns, infants and toddlers with the goal to have read 1,000 books before the little one enters kindergarten. At the March 30 event, all are invited to meet Jackie Urbanovic and learn simple ways to help strengthen their child’s language skills and build vocabulary by reading aloud. A book signing will follow the program.

Preschool-A-Palooza on Saturday, March 4

February 20, 2017 by Lacey Love

Register online or call the Youth Services Desk at 724.941.9430 #3.

Finding the right preschool for your child can be an exciting yet stressful task. To help area parents gather the information they need to make the best choice, the Peters Township Public Library will offer a Preschool-A-Palooza on Saturday, March 4 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. While parents ask questions of representatives from area preschools, Children’s Librarian Linda Esposito will offer activities for children including games, crafts and a basket raffle.

While visiting the library, families can explore the library’s new Play K area that allows children to “play Kindergarten” using materials for six different themed playscapes. Within each playscape, the nine key learning areas for PA’s Learning Standards for Early Childhood are reinforced as children play and participate in the activities. My Colorful World, All Around Town, and Let’s Go Shopping are a few examples of the playscapes that will be on display on a rotating basis.

Children can experience the new Everbright Light Board that was recently installed in the Family Activity Center adjacent to the Children’s Department on the first floor of the library. Purchased with donations from the WCCF Day of Giving, the Everbright is an interactive light wall for all ages with hundreds of adjustable color dials that rotate through the color spectrum.

For more information about the Preschool-A-Palooza, contact Linda Esposito at lesposito@ptlibrary.org.

NEW Everbright Light Board

February 20, 2017 by Lacey Love

We have a new addition to the Family Activity Center! An Everbright Light Board was recently installed which was purchased through generous donations on the WCCF Day of Giving.

From the Everbright web site: Everbright is an interactive light wall for all ages. Inspired by the Lite-Brite, it’s a huge grid of hundreds of adjustable color dials that rotate endlessly in either direction through the color spectrum.

Yes, it looks like a giant Lite-Brite. But it does things that no Lite-Brite can do.

Unlike screens, Everbright feels satisfying to touch. Instead of removable pegs with a limited selection of individual colors, this alternative to the giant Lite-Brite has dials that change in hue as you twist them, offering almost unlimited color possibilities when creating designs. When you’re done drawing, the entire board resets to a blank canvas with the press of a button.

Stop by the Family Activity Center during library hours and wake up your imagination with our Everbright!
