Adult Programs Survey Results

November 23, 2021 by Sydney Krawiec

In October 2021, we emailed our newsletter subscribers four questions to help us plan programs for adults in 2022.

Our survey identified four essential points that help us address the needs and wants of the community:
● Who is interested in adult programs?
● How do people want to participate in programs?
● When are people available for programs?
● What kind of programs are of interest?

We received 215 responses and are excited to share what we learned.

Graphic of survey responses from 2021 program survey showing age, preferred time, format, and types of programs.

Your responses will help us plan and react to the needs and interests of the community. Furthermore, we can continue to provide programs that align with the PA Forward Literacies: Basic Literacy, Information Literacy, Civic & Social Literacy, Health Literacy, and Financial Literacy. For example, the survey responses revealed that you are interested in Physical Health. Knowing this, we can leverage our community partners and continue to have programs like Medicare 101 (11.17.21), upcoming Nutrition Myths (12.9.21), and add new classes and events to the mix.

If you responded to the survey, you may receive follow-up emails from our staff as we continue to explore your responses and share programs that may interest you.

Didn’t see the survey? You can sign up for our e-newsletter and select the kind of updates you would like to receive.

Do you want to present a program at PTPL? Read our program policies and fill out a program proposal to share your ideas.

If you have any questions or want to know more about programs at PTPL, please get in touch with Sydney Krawiec, Program & Outreach Coordinator. You can reach her via email at  skrawiec@pt-library.org or call 724-941-9430 ext. 3260.

College Financial Aid Night

September 25, 2019 by Lacey Love

Discover the ins and outs of how to pay for college at our annual College Financial Aid Night on Tuesday, October 1 at 6:30 p.m. A representative from the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA) will discuss a variety of methods to finance a college education, as well as look at alternatives to the traditional college experience. We invite high school students and their parents to this free presentation, which will describe all federal and PA-state financial aid programs, scholarships, and the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) application process. A question and answer session will follow the program.

The 2020-2021 FAFSA will be available for filing online on October 1, 2019. Rising high school seniors who plan to begin college in 2020 should prepare to fill out the FAFSA starting in October. Join us at this event and bring your FAFSA questions too! Register to reserve your seat at https://tinyurl.com/yyph65ey.

Thinking Money traveling exhibition!

March 16, 2017 by Lacey Love

Peters Township Public Library will host Thinking Money, a new traveling exhibition designed to teach tweens, teens and the adults in their lives about money, from Saturday, April 1 through Sunday, April 30. The public is also invited to attend a variety of programs for all ages about financial topics like saving, spending and avoiding fraud.

“Money affects all of us, but many of us lack the information we need to make smart decisions about our financial futures,” said Sue Miller, Assistant Library Director. “Thinking Money is designed to teach us about financial literacy in a way that is not only understandable, but fun, and we’re proud to bring it to our library – the only one in Pennsylvania!”

Through an adventure-themed storyline, interactive iPad content and other fun activities, Thinking Money explores themes like wants vs. needs, preparing for a rainy/sunny day, imagining your future self and avoiding financial fraud.

Programs will include:

  • Thinking Money Kick-off Financial Fair for all ages on Saturday, April 1 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
  • JA More Than Money for grades 3 through 5 on five Mondays, April 3, 10, 24 and May 1 and 8 from 4 to 4:45 p.m.
  • Youth Financial Education Workshop for ages 13 and up on four Thursdays, April 6, 13, 20 and 27 from 7 to 8:00 p.m.
  • Achieving Financial Excellence for adults on Saturday, April 22 from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon – CANCELED by the instructor from NeighborWorks Western Pennsylvania
  • Junior Jumpstarts for students in grades 9 to 12 and parents on Tuesday, April 11 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.
  • Financial Fraud Bingo for adults on Tuesday, April 25 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.
  • Money for College for adults on Saturday, April 29 from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Admission to the exhibition, which will be located in main lobby of the library, and all programs are free of charge.

Thinking Money was created by the American Library Association (ALA) in partnership with the FINRA Investor Education Foundation.

In April 2016, ALA and the FINRA Foundation announced 50 libraries nationwide to host the 1,000-square-foot exhibition. In addition to the exhibition loan, the Peters Township Public Library also received a $1,000 programming allowance, expenses paid for a training session at the 2016 ALA Annual Conference in June 2016, and promotional and support materials.

This Financial Literacy program is offered as part of the Pennsylvania Library Association’s statewide initiative, PA Forward, to demonstrate that libraries can help citizens become informed consumers and guide individuals, small businesses, and other organizations to contribute to the economic vitality of their communities. Federal and State Tax Information

February 6, 2017 by Lacey Love

The library participates with the IRS and Pennsylvania Department of Revenue to provide a limited number of Federal and State Tax forms for the convenience of the community. As soon as tax forms/publications become available, they are placed in our Tax Distribution Area located on the first floor of the library.

This year, AARP Foundation is again providing free tax assistance and preparation for taxpayers with low- to moderate-income through the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program. AARP Foundation Tax-Aide, in its 48th year, is the nation’s largest free tax assistance and preparation service, giving special attention to the older population.

AARP volunteers offer a limited number of appointments at the library for tax assistance. Please call the Circulation Desk at 724.941.9430 #1 to inquire about an appointment for this service.

Take steps NOW for tax filing season

December 19, 2016 by Lacey Love

Get ready today to file your 2016 federal income tax return. Read this information from the IRS web site:

Individual Tax Identification Number (ITIN)

What You Need to Know

  • Processing delays are likely for filers with expired Individual Tax Identification Numbers.
  • There are two reasons an ITIN would expire December 31, 2016:
    • If you have not used your ITIN on a U.S. tax return at least once for tax years 2013, 2014 or 2015 or
    • If your ITIN has the middle digits 78 or 79 (9NN-78-NNNN or 9NN-79-NNNN)

What You Need to Do

  • You can renew your ITIN now if it expired and you plan to use it on a U.S. tax return.
  • No action is needed by expired ITIN holders who don’t need to file a tax return next year.
  • There are new documentation requirements when applying for or renewing an ITIN for certain dependents.
  • To avoid delays, ensure accurate W-7 and valid ID documents are submitted.
  • Find more information at IRS.gov/ITIN.

Refunds

What You Need to Know

  • Expecting a refund? Some refunds must be held until February 15.
    • According to a new tax law change, the IRS cannot issue refunds before February 15 for tax returns that claim the Earned Income Tax Credit or the Additional Child Tax Credit.
    • This applies to the entire refund, even the portion not associated with these credits.
  • The IRS will begin to release EITC/ACTC refunds starting February 15. However, the IRS cautions taxpayers that these refunds likely won’t arrive in bank accounts or debit cards until the week of February 27. Read more about refund timing for early EITC/ACTC filers.

What You Need to Do

  • Be careful not to count on getting a refund by a certain date, especially when making major purchases or paying other financial obligations.
  • You don’t need to wait until February 15 to file your tax return. While the IRS must hold the refund until February 15, it will begin taking the steps it normally does to process your tax return once the filing season starts.
  • File a complete and accurate return and include all known refundable credits with your original return.
  • Check Where’s My Refund on IRS.gov or the IRS mobile app, IRS2Go, after February 15 for your personalized refund status.

Adjusted Gross Income (AGI)

What You Need to Know

  • Some taxpayers using a software product for the first time may need to know their 2015 Adjusted Gross Income, or AGI, to e-file their 2016 tax return.
  • When self-preparing your taxes and filing electronically, you must sign and validate your electronic tax return by entering your prior-year AGI or your prior-year Self-Select PIN. Using an electronic filing PIN is no longer an option.

What You Need to Do

  • If you have a copy of your 2015 federal income tax return, your AGI is on line 37 of the Form 1040; line 21 on the Form 1040-A or line 4 on the Form 1040-EZ.x
  • Learn more about how to verify your identity and electronically sign your tax return at Validating Your Electronically Filed Tax Return.

Protecting Taxpayers

What You Need to Know

  • To better protect taxpayers, the IRS recently upgraded its identity verification process for certain online self-help tools. The purpose is to prevent taxpayer impersonations and account takeovers by identity thieves.

What You Need to Do

  • Because the Secure Access platform is more rigorous, it helps if you prepare to register in advance.
  • The new authentication is currently being applied to Get Transcript Online.

IRS Help

What You Need to Know

  • All IRS Taxpayer Assistance Centers now operate by appointment only.
  • Many questions can be resolved on the IRS.gov website without visiting a TAC.

What You Need to Do

  • Start with IRS.gov for help including tools, filing options and other services and resources.
  • If you believe your tax issue cannot be handled online or by phone, always check IRS.gov for days and hours of service as well as services offered at the IRS TAC location you plan to visit. For most services you must call to make an appointment.
