Military Experts discuss National Security

January 5, 2017 by Lacey Love

The library will welcome senior military officers from the United States Army War College for a panel discussion on U.S. National Security Challenges for the New Administration on Tuesday, January 24 at 7:00 p.m. This program is hosted in partnership with the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh and offers the community the opportunity to meet with officials from the U.S. Army War College who have first-hand experience with military operations and tactics at home and abroad.

This program is filled. Registration is now closed.

Each new administration must define its national security strategies in a complex world. During this national security briefing, senior officers representing several branches of the United States military will discuss a variety of national security issues and the role that the military plays in addressing these challenges. Included in this are Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear threats, the possibility of U.S. assistance in Mexican and Central American border patrol, and how to ensure a stable future in conflict zones.

Colonel Edward Kaplan, U.S. Air Force, will introduce each of the panelists. You can read more about them in the U.S. Army War College Panel Members and Faculty Bios.

Topics for this year’s program include:

Diversity in the U.S. Military
Lieutenant Colonel John Dobbin, U.S. Air Force

Border Security: Cooperation with our Southern Neighbors
Commander Jesse Muñoz, U.S. Border Patrol

The Integration of Women into Combat Positions
Lieutenant Colonel Monica Radtke, U.S. Army

Stability and Security in Afghanistan
Colonel Michael Sullivan, U.S. Army

Legal Implications of Autonomous Weapons
Colonel Eric Young, U.S. Army

This program is generously funded by the McMurray Veterans of Foreign Wars POST 764 and is part of the Pennsylvania Library Association PA Forward initiative. Libraries can give citizens of all ages the knowledge and skills they need to improve their lives, to contribute effectively in their communities, and to participate in civil discourse.

Free Driver’s Ed programs online

October 25, 2016 by Lacey Love

Peters Township Public Library announces a partnership with Driving-Tests.org to offer free PA Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) practice tests to library patrons. The new service includes free tests specifically based on Pennsylvania’s DMV materials. It is the only site of its kind to include accessibility tools that let users hear selections read aloud, make them into MP3s, translate pages into other languages, magnify text, and mask portions of the screen for greater visibility on the practice tests.

This partnership allows the library to harness the power of Driving-Tests.org’s specialized practice exams to turn new drivers into safer drivers. The new program will work as an outreach to several groups of patrons, including teens, those with disabilities, and seniors who need to take a renewal exam, as well as patrons at every other stage of life.

Driving-Tests.org is a part of Elegant E-Learning, Inc., an eight-year-old company with a proven track record of revolutionizing online resources for learner drivers. Driving-Tests.org is part of a plan to improve global driver safety by providing free practice tests written by experts to anyone who wants to study, along with online copies of official study guides.

Get an overview on completing the FAFSA®

October 10, 2016 by Lacey Love

In partnership with the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency (PHEAA), the Peters Township Public Library will offer a free FAFSA Completion Overview on Monday, November 7 from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m. at the library. This workshop, for college-bound seniors and their parents, offers help in completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) by providing an overview of each step of the form.

Registration is required for this program. Register online or call 724-941-9430 #1.

Important changes have gone into effect beginning with the 2017–18 FAFSA®:

  • You’ll be able to submit your 2017-2018 FAFSA® as early as Oct. 1, 2016, rather than Jan. 1, 2017. The earlier submission date will be a permanent change, enabling you to complete and submit a FAFSA® as early as October 1 every year.
  • You’ll use earlier income and tax information. Beginning with the 2017–18 FAFSA®, students will be required to report income and tax information from an earlier tax year. On the 2017–18 FAFSA® you will report your 2015 income and tax information, rather than your 2016 income and tax information.

Discuss A Midsummer Night’s Dream

October 1, 2016 by Lacey Love

In conjunction with a local production of Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the library will offer a discussion of the play on Friday, October 14 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. The program, geared to adults and teens, is being offered to enhance your viewing of the production at the Little Lake Theater in October and November.

Registration is required to attend this program. Register online or call 724.941.9430 #1 to register.

Jane Hollman, a former English teacher at Upper St. Clair High School and fervent Shakespeare fan, will provide background about the English Renaissance and of Shakespeare’s contributions to the times. She will lead the discussion in preparation for viewing A Midsummer Night’s Dream. You are encouraged to read the play before attending the program.

After the discussion, a winner will be chosen to receive two complimentary tickets donated by Little Lake Theater to attend any Thursday, Friday or Sunday performance of the play at their theater during the October or November run.
