One of the most fun places to bring your children in Peters Township is the Youth Services Section of the library. Our recently remodeled space offers something every child will enjoy. Our Family Activity Center features an EverBright board, LEGO and block tables, playhouse, and puzzle center. Our Play K table (located at the entrance to the department) displays rotating toys that encourage family engagement and promote kindergarten readiness.
Our friendly and knowledgeable Youth Services staff are always available to help with book recommendations or explain the many features the department offers. We believe it is important to read daily to children as soon as they are born and encourage all little ones to participate in our 1000 Books before Kindergarten program. We are honored to partner with author Jackie Urbanovic for this program! Each child that completes the program will receive a special book autographed by Jackie!
Looking to prepare your child for kindergarten and have no idea where to start? Use our online form to indicate the topics you would like to work on with your child and we will pull the resources for you!
Let us find a bundle of books for your young reader based on their reading level and interests. Complete our online form and we will pull up to 10 books for your reader and place them on hold for you.
Your family will love their visits to bright, colorful, and bustling portion of the library! Library staff is always on hand to help with book recommendations or to explain the many features their department offers. Ask them about our new “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” Program, and be sure to pick up a brochure or two showing all the upcoming events for your children. Book baskets are provided to help transport your selections to and from the library and can be checked out for 2 weeks.
Our Family Activity Center provides child-friendly furniture, soft toys, and a playhouse for hours of library fun. There are two preschool computers available that are preloaded with fun and educational games, including earphones and a tiny mouse for small hands.
The Youth Services Department is currently developing a special Tween Corner located right outside the teen room. This space will feature displays of books and graphic novels that are great for tween readers. The area will also feature a special studying and work area.
Teens in grades 6 and above must come in and check out our teen room that is JUST FOR YOU! Whether you love to read, play video games, or simply hang out, the Teen Room is a great place to go! We have four TVS with various gaming systems set up, a board game collection available for free play, a craft cabinet with materials always available for creating and making, study/work tables, as well as our entire Young Adult collection.
In 2017 the Youth Services department started Scarlett’s Sunshine Section. This section is a special area of our library that offers resources for children and families who are coping with loss. We started the section in honor and memory of Scarlett Pauley, who brought sunshine into the lives of everyone who knew her. The Scarlett’s Sunshine Section is proud to partner with The Still Remembered Project and WQED of Pittsburgh.
